To become the best you need to understand how the best think. Below is part 2 of the DJ tips and DJ advice series, with DJ tips and DJ advice from some of the most famous and best DJs on the planet. As usual after each tip or piece of advice I have shared what it means to me.
Dave Seaman
“Practice makes perfect, really. It is like learning to drive. First you practice DJing in your room, but when you get out on the road its a whole different thing. Being able to do it in front of a huge group of people is a whole new world. Getting over that initial fear of people being there. A lot of times its being able to relax and get into it. Really, a lot of DJing is about being comfortable.”
Dave says it perfectly, when learning how to become a DJ practice makes perfect, the more you practice the more comfortable you will feel, the more comfortable you feel the more confident you will be. It is that confidence that will allow you to be at your best when it’s your time to shine.

“There is no approach other than play what you feel. You can’t have any preconceived notions about what you are going to play.”
Never plan a full DJ set, it’s ok to have a general idea of what direction you are going to go but never plan your full set, you need to work out what the dance floor wants and give it to them.
Anthony Pappa
“Warming up is the most important role of the night; But I believe clubs should have speed limits! No going over 125 bpm before midnight. If you do, your off, and we’ll suspend your pay for two weeks.
No matter what time you get to play, your set is as equally important. Don’t think if you are playing a warm-up set that it is not important because it’s critically important to the progression of the night.
“When the needle drops the bullshit stops!”
It’s just the way that it is.
Danny Tenaglia
“A lot of people say, I’m not into CD players, they don’t mix as well, and I totally try and convert them. Half the stuff I get now, I burn to CD because it’s really an incredible tool. You can loop an intro and extend it wherever you want, you can pitch things down or up and not lose the key – you have the master tempo feature. There’s no reason to fear CDs.”
As DJs we can’t be afraid of evolution and technology, we should embrace it – technology is our friend! Learn how to DJ on vinyl and CD
Jeff Mills
